Two dry ports in Ywar Thargyi (Yangon) and Myit Nge (Mandalay) will be complete in April 2019, a spokesperson for Myanma Railways said. A dry port is an inland intermodal terminal directly connected by road or rail.
The project, under which freight trains will run from Ywar Thargyi to Myit Nge, will commence in April this year and be complete within 12 months, said U Aung Myint Hlaing, general manager in the economic department of Myanma Railways.
The company launched a tender for the projects on April 2017. Kerry Resources Transport will build the Ywar Thargyi dry port, while Kerry Logistics Company won the tender for the Myit Nge dry port. Plans are currently being drawn up to construct the two ports.
A freight train is currently running from Yangon’s Wardan warehouse to Paleik station in Mandalay since August 4, 2017.
The train has a total of 11 carriages and one carriage can carry 60 tonnes of goods. The carry fee is currently K30 for one mile for one tonne of goods.
“For that train, we have a contract to run one round trip with 11 carriages in one week. But sometimes, depending on demand from traders to transport goods, we allow the train to run two or three times a week. Generally, we allow up to 44 carriages to run but sometimes, 80-90 carriages are needed,” said U Aung Hlaing Myint.
When the two dry ports are complete, the freight line will be moved from Wardan-Paleik to Ywar Thargyi-Myit Nge, according to Myanma Railways.
