The Yangon region administration department has banned the flying of drones in 16 townships to ensure the safety of aircraft landing and taking off at the Yangon International Airport.

The order is effective since November 28, the agency said.

People who violate the order can face up to six months imprisonment, a fine or both, the agency said.

Areas where flying drones are prohibited include North Okkalapa, New East and North Dagaon, Insein, Hlaingthaya, Shwepyitha, Mayangon, Hlaing, Kamayut, Kyimyindaing, Sanchaung, Bahan, Seikkyi Kanaungto, Mingaladon, Hlawgu and Htantapin townships.

“We just obey the directive from the Yangon Region administration department as they decide the drone-restricted areas. Only the regional government has the right to limit the drone areas, according to the law,” an officer from Yangon Eastern District department told The Myanmar Times on December 12.

“I haven’t seen drones flying within my district. But in Nay Pyi Taw, there was a drone case recently,” he added.

Two foreign journalists were sentenced to two months in prison for attempting to fly a drone near government buildings in the country’s administrative capital.

Singaporean Lau Hon Meng, 43, and Malaysian Mok Choy Lin, 47, along with their local interpreter, Aung Naing Soe, and driver, Hla Tin, are serving a two-month sentence after pleading guilty to violating the country’s aircraft act by attempting to fly a drone outside the parliament building on October 27.

Authorities have slapped the culprits with two more charges: violation of the country’s import and export laws by bringing the drone into the country without a permit and violation of the country’s immigration law by committing a crime while in the country.

An aircraft seemed to have collided with a drone mid-air between Hlewgu and Yangon while landing at Yangon International airport in October, according to the Department of Civil Aviation.

“The pilots reported that they found the drone near the aircraft at that time. That is very dangerous for many people. That is why we reported to the Yangon Region government to limit authorised drone areas between Hlewgu and Yangon,” U Ye Htut Aung, deputy director general of DCA, said on December 12. “But the list of townships (where drones are prohibited) were made by the Yangon Region government.”
