Thousands of undocumented workers are returning home from Thailand due to a new labour law, while the number of MoU workers migrating to Thailand is higher than last month.

The Myawady District Immigration and Population Department said that there were 8,491 male and 6,582 female workers going to Thailand in June.

Thousands of Myanmar migrants were arrested due to Thailand’s new labour law which was issued on June 20.

Due to severe punishments in the law, over 20,000 Myanmar migrants have returned home, passing through Myawady Border area and some are now returning via other border areas.

As there are job shortages and low salaries in Myanmar, people are entering Thailand to hunt for jobs.

Although there were a total of 199 migrants returning home on July 3, more than 100 workers were leaving to Thailand on July 4.

“ I want to work at home. Even though we didn’t get the salary working at Thailand, we want to get our salary Bt200 (around Ks8,000) per day in Mae Sot,” said a worker returning from Thailand to Myawady Township.

Illegal Myanmar migrants are frequently arrested in Thailand.
