Over 80 per cent of the Kyaiktiyo cable car project is finished, according to Han Jung Seuk, project manager of Sky Asia, the company behind the project.
Han Jung Seuk said: “Although we expected it to be finished in April, the project could not be finished in time due to bad weather and shortage of machinery which did not arrive in time.
“We are trying to open it before the full moon on Thadingyut. We erected seven posts to connect the overhead cable for the project. A total of 44 vehicles for the project have already arrived. Technicians from the French cable-car firm Poma are waiting to install them. We will hold a test trial before operating it,” he said.
“The project is expected to be finished in mid-September and we will first conduct tests,” said adviser Aung Than from Sky Asia.
The project is jointly developed by Myanmar’s Yadanar Shwe Sin Kyi and Sky International Co Ltd from South Korea. They founded Sky Asia and the project is expected to cost US$20 million. Myanmar Investment Commission signed a 50-year contract with Sky Asia.
The 955-metre cable is designed to have 43 vehicles, each carrying eight people and taking 10 minutes to reach the iconic granite boulder.
