New Chinese buses bought by Yangon regional government will run on 20 bus routes operated by the Yangon Urban Public Transport Company (YUPT), according to Dr Maung Aung, secretary of the Yangon Region Transport Authority.

“The new buses will be added mostly at bus routes operated by the YUPT. We will add some buses to the No.37 route operated by Yangon Bus Public Company. We will run a new route from Dagon to Insein,” he said.

The YUPT said it was planning to run the buses on the 3, 24, 26, 28, 58 and 65 routes.

The regional government formed a committee to buy up to 1,000 buses. It signed a contract to buy 500 buses from the Anhui Ankai Automobile Co Ltd and 500 from the Yutong Bus Company with the arrangement of the Chinese ambassador.

“We couldn’t give CNG [compressed natural gas] to old buses. We will replace old buses with new ones step by step. Some of the new buses are labelled with route numbers and will run from this week,” he said.
