One thousand brand new Chinese-made buses will soon enter the Yangon Bus Service (YBS) as part of government plans to replace the city’s ageing rolling stock, said a transport official.

In April, the Yangon regional government purchased 500 busses each off Chinese bus-makers Yutong and Ankai and now over a third of the new stock has arrived in Yangon, said Dr Maung Aung, Secretary of the Yangon Region Transport Authority(YRTA).

“On June 2, EUKOR Shipping Line delivered 350 out of the total 1,000 buses to Thilawa Jetty,” he said.
The 2017 model busses come with a price tag of $65,000 each, excluding shipping.

The two companies will provide warranties for all busses while an assessment team organised by the Myanmar Engineers Society will be responsible for maintenance checks and servicing.

In January, the YRTA merged over 300 bus lines into 79, awarding 8 business licences to companies to operate the new routes. The reforms were said to make the system easier to regulate and to improve user satisfaction by reducing accidents and traffic congestion.

Since then, the YRTA has added new bus lines with updates on new routes being released through the YBS website and official Facebook page.

The YBS is used by 2.6 million commuters every day, said Dr Maung Aung.
