Telenor’s CEO has said Myanmar’s 4G/Long- T erm Evolution (LTE) services will be ‘among’ the best in the region, after the telco announced it will begin the rollout of its 4G/LTE services in Yangon “soon”.

The Norway-backed telco announced in May that it was allocated 2 x 10 megahertz blocks of neutral spectrum in the 1800 megahertz frequency band, at a cost of $80 million for 12 years.

The newly acquired spectrum will enable Telenor to rollout 4G/LTE services in major cities across the country, which carries speeds up to 10 times that of conventional 3G networks, read a company press release.

“The rapid deployment of 4G/LTE services will elevate Myanmar to be among the best in this region, and further accelerates the adoption of multimedia-rich digital services for communications, commerce, education, and entertainment,” said Lars Erik Tellmann, Chief Executive Officer of Telenor.

“With 1800 MHz spectrum, we now are set up to provide customers with a richer internet experience with superior download speeds, smoother high-definition video streams, lag-free gaming, a stronger social media experience, and more consistent performance in peak hours, among others,” he said.

“We are in the midst of enabling 4G/LTE on 1800 MHz on our network, and hope to expand services to more cities and towns in coming months – including an impending launch of 4G/LTE in Yangon very soon!”
