Yangon regional government has issued smart cards to 25,000 registered squatters in Hlaingthaya Township.
The regional government has been collecting a list of squatters in the township in recent weeks.
Township MP Myat Min Thu said: “We are still collecting the lists of squatters. The number of squatters in Hlaingthaya is expected to reach about 50,000.”
The Township General Administration Department is leading the process with other groups helping in Shwelinpan industrial zone, No.6 ward, Yayokkan village and Nyaung village tract.
In September Yangon started collecting squatter lists in South Dagon, Dagon Seikkan, North Dagon, Thaketa, Thanlyin, Kyauktan, Dalla and Mayangon townships.
The authority issues smart cards to squatters after a systematic registration with photos and finger prints.
The region government planned to initially compile squatter lists in 13 townships with the others to follow later.
