Myanmar exported over 1.2 million tons of rice in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year, earning $376 million, according to the figures of Ministry of Commerce.
As of January, 68 percent of rice exports, or 800,000 tons, were sold through border trade, while over 400,000 tons were sold through other channels, the ministry said.
About 80 percent of the country’s rice exports went to China, mostly over the border. Other exporting countries and regions include Indonesia, Singapore, the European Union, Africa, Russia and Brazil.
Meanwhile, Pakistan and the Philippines have made proposals to purchase Myanmar’s rice under a government-to-government system, while negotiations are underway to boost rice exports to Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
The country exported 767,753 tons of rice in the last fiscal year between 2015 and 2016.
