Myanmar plans to extend visas for international investors, experts and workers to six months or one year, said Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and Population Thein Swe.

The minister revealed the plan after MP Myint Lwin for Pazundaung Township constituency brought up the subject at a session of the Lower House held in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

Under the current company and the investment law, foreign investors, experts and workers have to apply for a visa from the Immigration and Population Department and receive approval from the Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

Visas are granted for three months for first time applicants, six months for second time applicants and one year for  third.

The MP suggested that Myanmar should allow a one-year visa for foreigners doing business in the country as other countries do.

Union Minister Thein Swe said plans were underway to grant visas for six months or one year if applicants submit proof of employment.

“We will grant visas for six months or one year depending on the wishes of foreign businesspeople,” said the minister.
