Students from the Magway University of Medicine issued a statement calling for the cancellation of the lease of a land plot near Yangon General Hospital between Bogyoke Raod and Pyi Road for the construction of a private hospital.
The statement says: “The plot was initially meant to be the site of expansions of the Yangon General Hospital. But now, it has been leased for the building of a private hospital by Parkway Group from Singapore for 50 years. That place was inaugurated by NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi for the building of extensions to the Yangon General Hospital. But the current government has permitted businessmen to implement the private hospital project. This does not meet the people’s needs. Students from the Magway University of Medicine denounce the actions of the current government and its lack of transparency.”
The students have collected signatures from other students at Magway University to oppose the project. These signatures were sent to three parliaments, as well as to Aung San Suu Kyi, Commander-in-Chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, President Thein Sein, and the Minister for Health, former Union parliament speaker Thura Shwe Mann, MPs and the chairman of the NLD health committee.
Professors, doctors and health staff who are part of the yellow ribbon campaign, which opposes the appointment of former military officers to health ministry positions, sent the statement with the signatures to respective departments on February 27.
